doubting Thomas didn’t doubt: John 20:24-29

Hand 442104 640

If you read the story of Thomas in John chapter 20, you will see something amazing: he didn’t doubt. What he did was refuse to believe UNLESS he saw certain things.  That’s not doubt.

Doubting is being in two minds; it’s being uncertain of something.

James 1:5-8, esv:  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

That wasn’t Thomas:

24 Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin,[d] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” John 20:24-25 esv

He wouldn’t take the word of the others, but would believe if he saw and touched Jesus.  He was not going to believe until he had that evidence. He was unbelieving, but waiting or willing to see the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection.

Thomas needed certain evidence. And Jesus gave it to Him. I don’t think what Thomas needed Jesus felt was unreasonable. Interesting though that Jesus commands Thomas to believe, and to not disbelieve.

John 20:26-29 esv:Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them.Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,“Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him,“Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”’

  • Are you like Thomas and looking for particular evidences for the faith? There is sufficient evidence that Jesus rose from the dead and is the Son of the living God.
  • Or are you running away from the faith and looking for reasons to NOT believe?
